He has a secret crush on [[Nellie Brie]], though he expresses it by acting sardonic toward her and pulling jokes such as making young [[Fievel Mousekewitz]] her assistant. [[Tanya Mousekewitz]] has a crush on Reed, but he either ignores it or is oblivious to it. At the end of the movie he ends up heroically sacrificing himself to save Nellie from the cats, and gets knocked unconscious. When he awakens, he finally tells Nellie how he feels and the two become a couple.
